History of Botanic Gardens Kiel

A model of the garden as planted 1669 by Johann Daniel Major

The Botanic Gardens Kiel were founded in 1669, only four years after the inception of Kiel University. Johann Daniel Major, professor for theoretical medicine and botany, obtained permission to use one quarter of the palace garden to establish a Hortus Medicus. After several moves within the city of Kiel, the gardens are now at their fifth location within the University Campus on Leibnizstrasse. The former garden, the "Alter Botanischer Garten" ("Old Botanic Gardens") is now a park close to the Kiel fjord.

In 2019 the Botanic Gardens Kiel celebrate their 350th anniversary!
